Organic hemp hearts
Hemp has been grown for centuries for the quality of its fiber for uses in paper, rope, sail, and cloth and for its edible nutritious seeds. Hemp hearts come from the shelled seeds of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa. Unlike it’s marijuana cousin, hemp and in turn hemp hearts contain only minute amounts of psychoactive THC. Marijuana contains as much as 30% THC while in hemp it’s less than 0.3%.
Brave chose to use hemp hearts as one of the three base ingredients in our overnight breakfast because they offer a variety of nutritional benefits.
1. Hemp hearts are rich in healthy fats and the essential fatty acids omega-6 and omega-3.
2. They are also a great protein source. 40 grams of hemp hearts contain nearly 10 grams of plant protein.
3. Nutritionally dense hemp heart also contains high amounts of vitamin E, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron and zinc.
A precious ingredient
If there is a downside to hemp hearts, it’s the high price they command. We at Brave think that the nutritional benefits and the subtle nutty flavor of hemp hearts make it well worth the cost. Now that the US can legally grow industrial hemp the domestic production of hemp products, including hemp hearts, should increase, allowing us to buy this important plant protein source closer to home.
